Justice Laxmikanta Mahapatra was on 21 October 2013 sworn in as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court at Raj Bhava in Imphal, Manipur. He was appointed by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.
Governor Ashwani Kumar administered the oath of office to Justice Laxmikanta Mahapatra. Justice Mohapatra would act as acting chief justice of the high court till appointment of a full time chief justice.
The post of chief justice of High Court of Manipur remained vacant after the first chief justice Abhay M Sapre was transferred as chief justice of the Gauhati High Court.
North eastern states, Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur on 23 March 2013 got their own High Courts. Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court took is the first Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
With the opening of the three high Courts in the North Eastern states of India, the total number of high Courts in India has gone up to 24 from previous 21.
About Laxmikanta Mahapatra
Laxmikanta Mahapatra Graduated in Law from M S Law College, Cuttack in 1977 and enrolled as an advocate on 25 January 1978.
He practised mainly on Civil, Criminal, Service and Labour Laws. Mahapatra elevated as Judge of High Court of Orissa on 16 September 1999.
He was Transferred to Allahabad High Court on 17 October 2012. He Transferred to Manipur High Court on 10 October 2013.
