RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and JD(U) leader Jagdish Sharma have been disqualified from the Lok Sabha after being convicted in the Bihar fodder scam case. Besides them, a CBI court had also convicted former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and 42 others for fradulently drawing 37.7 crore rupees from Chaibasa treasury during the RJD regime in the 1990s. The RJD Chief was sentenced to rigourous imprisonment for five years by the CBI court after he was convicted. Lalu Yadav is currently lodged in the Birsa Munda prison in Ranchi. The formal disqualification of the duo by the Lok sabha speaker, came a day after, Congress MP Rashid Masood was disqualified from the Rajya Sabha after being convicted in a corruption case. A Delhi court had sentenced Rashid Masood for four years in jail in connection with the MBBS seats scam.
The supreme court had on 10 July, struck down the relevant section of Representation of People Act under which incumbent legislators can avoid disqualification till pendency of appeal in a higher court. Though the goverment had promulgated an ordinance in this regard but had to withdraw it following Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi publicy expressed opposition. |
