Oscar Hijuelos, the Cuban-American Writer, Died at 62

Oscar Hijuelos, the Cuban-American writer died on 13 October 2013 in New York City. He was 62 years old and died because of heart attack. He was the first Latino to win the Pulitzer Prize. He is survived by his wife.

• Oscar Jerome Hijuelos was born on 24 August 1951. 
• He was an American-born novelist of Cuba origin.
• He received education from Manhattan and authored various short stories as well as advertising copies.
• His first novel was Our House in the Last World.
• He is known for second novel which was eventually adapted for the movies, The Mambo Kings. 
• He won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize. 
• He was also honoured with the Ingram Merrill Foundation Award in 1983.
• His first novel- Our House in the Last World received the Rome Prize in the year 1985 by the American Academy in Rome.
• In the year 2000, he also won the Hispanic Heritage Award for Literature.
• He also published a memoir entitled Thoughts Without Cigarettes in the year 2011.
