US Announced Grant for Women's Safety in Delhi

The United States of America, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced on 29 October 2013 a 250000 US Dollar grant to for a programme called Delhi Safe City - Free of Violence against Women and Girls.

The grant was announced by the USA to the organization UN Women, which is a part of the United Nations’ Women’s Global Safe Cities Initiative.  

The grant is for the ongoing program Delhi Safe City – Free of Violence against Women and Girls that will be implemented in partnership with Indian civil society organizations.  

While announcing the grant U.S. Ambassador to India Nancy J. Powell told that the United States recognizes gender-based violence as one of the most debilitating factors impeding a woman’s active participation in any economy in the world and her ability to access resources and services.  We are pleased to partner with UN Women to help promote safe cities and reduce gender-based violence, which plagues every country in the world.

About Delhi Safe City – Free of Violence against Women and Girls programme

UN Women launched a new flagship initiative the Safe Cities Free of Violence against Women and Girls Global Programme (SafeCitiesprogramme). The Safe Cities programme is being piloted in five cities around the world including Delhi. The Safe Cities programme in Delhi calles as Delhi Safe City – Free of Violence against Women and Girls programme.

Aims of the programme

• A greater sense of safety, reduced fear, and increased comfort of women and girls in public spaces. 
• Increased use of public spaces and increased autonomous mobility of women and girls in the Delhi. 
• A reduction in different forms of Sexual Violence in public spaces, especially in the sites of intervention.
