Noted Marathi Playwright G.P. Deshpande Passed away

Noted Marathi playwright and political thinker Govind P Deshpande died on 16 October 2013 due to age-related ailments. He was 75.

G P Deshpande won acclaim for his plays including Udhvasta Dharmashala and Satyashodhak. (His famous Satyashodhak centred on the mission of pioneering social reformer Mahatma Phule).

• G.P. Deshpande, born in 1938 at Maharastra. He was a Marathi playwright and South Asian Scholar.

• G.P. Deshpande taught at the Centre for East Asian Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. 

• G. P. Deshpande was a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1996.

• His most well known plays are Udhwastha Dharamshala , Raastey , Andhar Yatra and Satyashodhak . 

• Deshpande play Satyashodhak in 2012, which is based on the life of social crusader Jyotiba Pule. Deshpande was known as a fierce critic of contemporary theatre in Maharashtra.
