  • Of the 6.6 million under-five deaths in 2012, most were from preventable causes such as pneumonia, diarrhoea or malaria; around 44% of deaths in children under 5 occurred during the neonatal period.
  • Under 5 mortality rate of India is at 56.
  • Malaria killed more than 1,200 children under 5 years of age every day in 2012. Globally, malaria was responsible for more than 450,000 child deaths in 2012. Of these, 97% were in sub-Saharan Africa.Childhood malaria mortality is strongly concentrated in the poorest countries in sub Saharan Africa.
