The Tamilnadu Chief Minister Ms.Jayalalithaa today inaugurated the 53rd World Fide Championship at Chennai. Speaking on the occasion, she listed out the various steps taken by the State Government in popularising games and sports at village and district levels.
The Chief Minister remarked that chess which is a game to improve focussing,planning, thinking ahead in abstract terms and juggling has caught the attention of the younger generation as it was evident that India now had 27 grandmasters and 76 international masters in the game of chess.
Ms.Jayalalithaa selected the name of the player alongwith the selection of the colour of the chess set.
Accordingly, Anand will play with black and Carlsen will play in White.
Ms.Jayalalithaa was also awarded honorary member of the FIDE organisation.
Earlier speaking to newspersons in Chennai, five time grandmaster Viswanathan Anand said that he was looking forward to playing and winning the game.
