18th International Children's Film Festival of India opens in Hyderabad

The 18th edition of the International Children's Film Festival of India, "The Golden Elephant" began at a colourful programme in Hyderabad this evening. The week long Golden Elephant festival was thrown open with the screening of Hindi Animation Film “Gopi Gawaiyya Bhaga Bajaiyya”. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tiwari, Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Eminent writer and lyricist Gulzar, Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapur and a host of child artists took part in the festival.

About one lakh, fifty thousand children including about 500 delegates are taking part in the festival in which over 200 films from all over the world will be screened at a dozen theaters. Special arrangements have been made for differently abled children.

Children’s film extravaganza has kick-started this evening at a gala event at the Telugu Lalita Kalathoranam in Hyderabad. Jointly organized by the Information Braodcasting Ministry, Children’s Film Society of India and the Andhra Pradesh state government the festival of Golden Elephant has brought over 200 films from 48 countries for the benefit of children. As CEO of the CSFI Dr Shravan Kumar said, superior quality of film content has been sourced from all over the globe to its true spirit. The festival has been enriched this time with adding more competition sections in Animation and Little Directors categories besides regular Action and Shorts categories. Not onely that the Children will have an opportunity of watching best films that made an entry into the prestigious international film festivals as the organizers sourced them for the first time. International Children’s Film Festival, Gopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya is the 78-minute long animated version of Satyajit Ray’s popular Bengali film Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen. About 20 countries that have not sent their entries last time have sent them and South American countries have entered the festival for the first time. Besides the world cinema, special focus will be on films from Czec Republic and 100 years of Indian Cinema.

Earlier, addressing a press conference, writer Gulzar and actor Ranbir Kapur highlighted the need for producing more films for children.
