Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota Resigned; Luiz Figueiredo to Take Over

Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota resigned on 26 August 2013 in the backdrop of accusations of helping the Bolivian senator, Roger Pinto to cross border into Brazil. Roger Pinto in turn was accused of corruption. His resignation was accepted by the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff. However, Antonio Patriota was in the meanwhile, appointed as the Brazil's envoy to the United Nations.

The present Brazilian UN ambassador, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo will now take over as the Brazilian Foreign Minister. Roger Pinto had accused the Government of Bolivia for having their links to the drug traffickers. Pinto escaped his arrest by taking a haven in the Brazilian embassy in La Paz.
It is important to note that Antonio Patriota is the first cabinet minister to resign from the office since a range of ministers left the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff in her first year of office in the year 2011.
