State wise Distribution by Level of Education

he recent National Sample Survey Report released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation provides information on the distribution of population by level of education across states. The key insights from the reported data are:
  • Less than 6% of persons above 15 years of age have no schooling in states like Kerala, Meghalaya and Mizoram
  • In states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, over 40 per cent of their above 15 population has no schooling
  • Citizens with the highest certification can be found in Delhi and Puducherry with the highest proportion of citizens who have a graduate degree or diploma certificate at 23.1 percent and 21.8 percent respectively
  • Only four per cent of the  above 15 population in Assam and Bihar has an education above higher secondary level
  • Data seems to suggest that education gets curtailed after the primary/middle level. The sharpest drop from this level to the next (Secondary/Higher Secondary) can be seen in the North Eastern states of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura
