NY elects its first Democratic mayor Blasio

The biggest city in the United States, New York has elected its first Democratic mayor for more than 20 years. Bill de Blasio succeeds Michael Bloomberg, who is stepping down after three terms.

In another contest, the first since President Obama was re-elected, the Democrat Terry McAuliffe defeated his Republican opponent Ken Cuccinelli to be elected Governor of Virginia, in a closely fought race.
