Google marks John Wisden's 187th birthday with a doodle

Google on Thursday marked John Wisden's 187th birthday with a doodle on its homepage.

John Wisden, born on September 5, 1826, in Brighton, was famous as an avid English cricketer and for writing Cricketers' Almanack(1864) or sometimes simply referred to as 'the Bible of Cricket'.

Wisden Cricketers' Almanack is considered to be one of the significant contributions to the sport and the world's widely famous sports reference book. It was first used in 1930s.

John Wisden, a first-class cricketer, played 187 matches for three English county cricket teams Sussex, Kent and Middlesex.

Wisden's passion towards cricket developed from his early days and at the age of 18 he made his debut for Sussex.

As a first class cricketer, he made his debut at the age of 19 for Sussex.

His cricketing abilities and knowledge was impressive and he was known as one of the best all-rounders of his days. Among his fellow sportsmen and fans he was popular as "The Little Wonder".

At the age of 57, Wisden died of cancer and he was buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.

To mark centenary of Wisden's death, a headstone was placed at his grave in 1984.

Today Google pays tribute to this legendary English cricketer with a doodle that features John Wisden in action. In the doodle the letter 'L' is replaced with a cricket pitch.
